I then removed the Ethernet cable from my virgin TV box and plugged this into the PlayStation and then the PlayStation connected to internet. I even got a new router and tried to use that for the WiFi signal but this couldn't connect to the internet either. This morning I received the multicast DNS vunerabilty email from virgin.

Multicast flooding can only happen on your local devices, it does not go out to the internet. I think it is highly unlikely the cause of your problem.

If the client configuration specifies the IP address of the concentrator, then DNS is not involved and the Virgin Media system will have no effect.
