Re: TCP, UDP and Multicast. You can't use TCP over Mcast since TCP is session based. As you stated UDP is the protocol of choice for Mcast applications. Other non session based protocol such as IGMP, OSPF, EIGRP, RIP also use Mcast for message delivery.

Nov 15, 2018 · FreeRTOS+TCP support for multicast and mdns. There is only one multi-cast address “supported” in FreeRTOS+TCP: the LLMNR protocol. As far as I know, there are no plans yet to support other multi-cast protocols.

Unicast is anything that is not broadcast nor multicast. All right, the definition is not very bright... When you send a packet and there is only one sender process -yours- and one recipient process (the one you are sending the packet to), then this is unicast. TCP is, by its own nature, unicast oriented.

Level 2 hosts must be able to both send and receive multicast traffic. They must know the way to join and leave multicast groups and to propagate this information to multicast routers. Thus, they must include an Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) implementation in their TCP/IP stack. 2.3 Sending Multicast Datagrams.

The great bulk of TCP/IP communications uses the Internet Protocol to send messages from one source device to one recipient device; this is called unicast communications. This is the type of messaging we normally use TCP/IP for; when you use the Internet you are using unicast for pretty much everything.

Multicast can be one-to-many or many-to-many distribution. Multicast should not be confused with physical layer point-to-multipoint communication. Group communication may either be application layer multicast or network assisted multicast, where the latter makes it possible for the source to efficiently send to the group in a single transmission.

TCP is true end-to-end. A connection is being established between communicating end systems, and a meticulous book-keeping takes place with respect to bytes sent, received and successfully acknowledged by the receiver. Also mechanisms like congest...
