Well I agree that SSL is useless, mostly because we should not trust the IRC server operators :) An client encryption is better, and not visible to IRCops & co About AUTH security, this is indeed an issue.

IRC (short for Internet Relay Chat) is an internet protocol designed to allow group and person-to-person text-based chat. An IRC Network is a collection of IRC servers connected to each other. IRC networks usually differentiate themselves by theme. For example, QuakeNet is a mostly gaming oriented network.

What is a g/k-line? If you're trying to connect to QuakeNet and the server tells you that you have been K-lined or G-lined it means that you have been banned from QuakeNet, and the reason for that ban is ALWAYS sent out right after the server tells you that you are banned. Some scripts, bots and bouncers hide this reason, but the reason is always sent.

https://www.quakenet.org/help/general/ive-banned-a-user-but-he-keeps-on-rejoining-what-to-do
I've banned a user, but he keeps on rejoining. What to do? If you have placed a ban on a user, and the ban is valid against that user, and they continue to join the channel after you have banned them, this means that they are being invited by a channel op or Q.
https://www.quakenet.org/about
About QuakeNet. QuakeNet was founded in 1997 by Garfield and Oli as an IRC network for Quakeworld players who wanted their own 'haven' from other networks. It quickly attracted players of both Quakeworld and other games and had a few hundred users before long. Mag and Madhacker introduced an early version of the service bot 'Q' around this time.

I've been a prolific IRC user for the past two decades, and I have a longstanding beef with QuakeNet. They do not support IRC over SSL connections, and have explicitly stated that they will not support this technology. They are entitled to their reasons, but for me, and thousands of others with restrictive ISPs, this means that we cannot connect with a regular IRC client.
