Dec 16, 2019 · Paleomagnetism: Strong evidence of Seafloor Spreading and Plate Tectonics. Paleomagnetism led the revival of the continental drift hypothesis and its transformation into theories of Sea Floor Spreading and Plate Tectonics. The regions that hold the unique record of earth’s magnetic field lie along the mid-ocean ridges where the sea floor is spreading.

Jun 11, 2010 · Since we know that geomagnetic reversals occur (south magnetic pole becoming north magnetic pole and the other way around), then if we can see the "striping" of paleomagnetism on the seafloor, then we can see that as the north-south direction keeps flopping, the floor must be moving away from the spreading center in order to record these flops.

The main contribution of paleomagnetism to support the plate tectonics was the discovered of stripes of normal and reversed magnetization in the ocean floor (normal means the same as we have today). This pattern is symmetric if we take the meso-oceanic ridge as a reference.

Plate tectonics is the theory that the earth's crust is broken up into plates that float on top of a hotter and more fluid layer below. Evidence to support this theory has been uncovered through the study of the earth's past magnetic field, known as paleomagnetism.

Jun 07, 2016 · Sea floor spreading is the phenomena of new sea floor being created through mid-ocean ridges. Wegener proposed that the continents themselves move, which is untrue. It is the tectonic plates that move. Sea floor spreading caused the break up of Pangea, which prompted Wegener to add this in support of his continental drift theory.

Depiction of rock layers showing normal and reversed polarityIn the early 1950s Patrick Blankett thought he could use paleomagnetism to finally prove the theory of Continental Drift. All he would have to do is gather paleomagnetic data from rocks of known ages and he could show how the continents did indeed move across the earth.

Convention currents in the earth's asthenosphere drag on the base of plates, causing them to move apart. As convection currents cause plates to move apart, a gap is created in the crust. Rising magma then fills the gap and COOLS to form new crust. Over time, this continues= sea floor spreading.
