Oct 20, 2018 · According your screenshot, file name (*.html) does not seem to be too long, looks less than 256/260 characters. Is there some abbreviation about file name on the pictrure? In the past the maximum supported file length was 260 characters (256 usable after the drive characters and termination character). In Windows 10 long file name support can be enabled which allows file names up to 32,767 characters (although you lose a few characters for mandatory characters that are part of the name).

Sep 12, 2011 · We have run into similar problems before, it is not just the individual file name but the entire path that makes up the "long file name", so all the nested folders contributed to this length. Have you the user look at all the folder names along the path, some of them may need to be shortened with abbreviations, etc.

That required that the disk format actually be changed to be able to handle long file names - where file names could be up to something like 255 characters long with an arbitrary amount of periods, the extension could be any length, and so forth. What will work is taking spaces OUT of the directory name -or- the file name. It will probably work okay if either of them have spaces but NOT BOTH. Strange but true. In most cases I advise folks to keep long file names and scratch long directory names using anacronyms instead like PWC\planning\teams or AFG\financial\committee.

Windows 95 abandoned that to allow long file names, but still limited the maximum path length (which includes the full folder path and the file name) to 260 characters.

I realise that I could track down the files with the long names and abbreviate them but they are amongst 10.596 other files in 700 folders & sub folders, the path to the files would be identical on either drive i.e. drivename:\music\album\filename, they copied successfully from another internal drive onto the external USB drive but will not copy from the external drive onto my PC's …
