Jan 21, 2008 · Nitrous oxide (N2O) is used in internal combustion engines as a way of delivering more oxygen into the cylinder. It isn't flammable itself, but when it is heated sufficiently, it separates into nitrogen and oxygen, and the oxygen is free to assist in the combustion of a fuel such as gasoline.

Nitrous oxide doesn't 'explode' by itself, it does however support combustion as it has weak bonds and 33% oxygen.

Nitrous oxide supports combustion by releasing the dipolar bonded oxygen radical, and can thus relight a glowing splint. N 2 O is inert at room temperature and has few reactions.Chemical formula: N, ₂O

Feb 11, 2018 · Nitrogen diatomic molecules (N2 existing in air) does not support combustion unless the combustion temperature rises to a high degree ( > 1000 degrees Celsius). For low combustion temperatures, Nitrogen acts as a cooling element inside the combustion chamber.

Aug 12, 2014 · Liquid laughing gas supports combustion. I liquified a small amount of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and put a burning piece of wood in it to see the result. The heat from the flame causes the nitrous oxide to decompose into nitrogen and oxygen, which supports combustion more vigorously than air.Author: Ben Krasnow

Apr 01, 2019 · (a) Nitrous oxide (empirical formula N2O, CAS Reg. No. 10024-97-2) is also known as dinitrogen monoxide or laughing gas. It is a colorless gas, about 50 percent heavier than air, with a slightly sweet smell. It does not burn but will support combustion. Nitrous oxide is manufactured by the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate.
