    You are correct to say that SCART is a standard, but it is a very loose standard, not all devices support all functionality. My guess is that if it is not a cable issue then your TV is at one end of the signal tolerance and your HUMAX is at the other end and that your DVD player was somewhere in the middle, which is why that set-up worked.
