Here's a table of nVidia GPU's supporting vdpau: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU#Supported_Cards. Also, make sure that the package vdpau-va-driver is installed. You can then run vainfo to see if your card is supported.

Which is similar to what vainfo does for VAAPI. Note that not all video players can use vdpau. For instance, as for now, VLC uses vaapi, which can be set to use vdpau underneath by installing: vdpau-va-driver (I believe VLC will support vdpau directly in the near future).

VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) lets Nvidia and AMD/ATI uvd cards play video with hardware acceleration. It lets any Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD system play files, including highly complex H.264 formats produced by the Hauppauge HD-PVR, that would otherwise require a high-end multicore CPU.

Nov 08, 2012 · The transport method only recognizes GLX calls. VDPAU will not work unless the app window that requires it is rendered on the Nvidia X server before being displayed on the Intel X server. The solution is buffer sharing such as dma_buf, but this is currently not possible with the proprietary driver.

The best frontend for mplayer in my view. Gnome-Mplayer is also very good, and is a new gtk gui. The Nvidia VDPAU Team PPA has Smplayer and so does Karmic. If you don't want to use it, fine. If you do, read on. Once you've got it installed, select Options>Preferences. Click on the Video tab. Change the output driver to VDPAU.

I run this card in my Ubuntu MythTV setup. I'm looking to purchase a 4K tv and I'm trying to figure out if this card will support VDPAU at 4K. From what i understand feature set D does but C doesn't. Also I read that the newest NVIDIA drivers support 4k@60Hz with 4:2:0 on Kepler. Does the Linux driver support this?

For hardware video decoding, which may be necessary on low-performance CPUs to playback 1080p content, make sure your GPU or VPU supports either VAAPI or VDPAU. For everything but older AMD cards and Nvidia, VAAPI is recommended. On AMD, you might have to start with the environment variable KODI_GL_INTERFACE set to GLX in order to get VDPAU support.
