May 22, 2007 · IE seems to ignore the utf-8 meta tag, it behaves correctly when it receive an actual utf-8 page. An actual utf-8 page has a three-bytes marker at the beginning of the file. See if you can send IE a page that begins with 0xEE 0xBB 0xBF.

It's not needed if your document is UTF-8 or UTF-16. But if otherwise, you should use it. My opinion is you should use it anyway. The only reason not to use it would be for IE6 users, as IE6 will go into 'quirks mode' if you have that declaration. But honestly... IE6 is a quirk mode anymore.

Does someone know why that dialog affect all the website (even pages with static content and no FCKeditor on it)? Is there a place when this can be configured? I replaced all "UTF-8" with "8859-1" but still the same behavior. I'm using IE6. Thanks

Oct 11, 2006 · IE6 treats the iso-8859-1 string "å *" as a three-byte character when interpreted as utf-8. Other browsers don't. (I'm not sure which is correct.) @charset is supported by at least Gecko, Opera and recent WebKit builds, and it seems IE6 supports it too, actually.
