PHP's IMAP module does not support this "IMAP IDLE" feature. Reading the same old discussions about this from over 10 years into the past, they suggest using imap_ping() for this. But imap_ping() does nothing of the sort; it just checks if the connection is still active. Nothing to do with the number of new e-mails for the entire account.

With that option enabled, seems the "Check for new messages every N minutes" is superfluous - unless the IMAP server doesn't support IMAP IDLE which means polling every N minutes is a safety backup to ensure

Jul 20, 2008 · Now we need this support on the iPhone too, and we're golden. Gmail's IMAP supports IDLE too, BTW. And this worked great with Chattermail on my Treo, giving me push email. I don't have this on my 3G iPhone, which is a step backwards.
