FreeNAS will happily use most raid cards just fine. Not a good idea for your storage, but it'll work just fine. You'll have to use the command line to mount the NTFS volume, but freeBSD/FreeNAS do support NTFS, especially for read access only.

May 15, 2012 · No, it wouldn't (comparing to plain AHCI mode). RAID mode is an AHCI mode with RAID BIOS enabled. It allows to build software RAID volumes for which RAID BIOS will provide booting support. ZFS has no any relations to that. Lack of AHCI support same time is really bad. It will reduce performance substantially, especially it you are using all 4 ports.

Now I have to configure that server for the FreeNAS, but I have found that the FreeNAS won't support the Hardware RAID. Instead, it has the software RAID but the software RAID requires 5 HDDs. One of them will be used for the OS and can't be used for other RAID configuration.

I plan on doing a 2TB 4 drive build because it fits my budget and size goals. I am torn between a Raid Z2 setup and a Raid 10. While looking around I see lots of posts that say stay away from Raidz, go with Raid 10 instead. I see their argument in some way but in a worse case senario, If I loose 2 drives on the same mirror, I loose my raid.

FreeNAS supports VirtualBox VMs, so you could use Windows in a VM Jail on FreeNAS. You could also virtualise Windows and FreeNAS on the same system using a hypervisor but it's a case of if you have to ask whether you can, you probably shouldn't (at least not until you've done some serious research).

RAID-Z3 (or Z2) or RAID 6? As noted by the other commenter, we need more information to give meaningful advice. I know that ZFS requires a lot of RAM and/or an SSD cache to compliment it. But it's also a software RAID. How does it compare to hardware RAID for performance? Depending on your setup, ZFS might kick its butt.
