Windows EMF which uses GDI library does not support transparent colors. However there is a newer EMF format called EMF+, which uses GDI+ library and supports transparency. Here is the documentation of the class. There are quite a few examples for these metafiles in C++ arround the internet, but some experiments can lead you the right way.

Transparency in PDF files refers to objects on a page, such as images or text, which are transparent or ‘show through’. This effect can be used for a number of reasons: It makes underlying image objects shine through, so it is useful for emulating glass, fog, varnish but also shadow.

Output formats that support transparency are PNG and vector graphics, with the following exceptions: The EMF output format does not support transparency when the graph is rendered as vector-graphics output. Transparency is supported when the graph is rendered as a PNG image.

Flattening divides transparent artwork into vector-based areas and rasterized areas. As artwork becomes more complex (mixing images, vectors, type, spot colors, overprinting, and so on), so does the flattening and its results. Flattening may be necessary when you print or when you save or export to other formats that don’t support transparency.

Graphs stored in EMF or WMF can usually be edited after they are imported. Graphs are imported at full size into Office, and can be resized without a loss of quality. Limitations: The EMF format does not support transparency (see Working Around the EMF and CGM Transparency Limitation). Only one graph per file is supported. SASEMF and SASWMF ...

Dear all, For vector-based output, PDF export of R graphs works well, but unfortunately Office on Windows provide poor support for PDF and importing & exporting to other formats using Inkscape can be buggy. Enhanced metafile export in turn does not support transparency (also not in package devEMF - are there any plans to support this perhaps in the future?).

Apr 18, 2018 · No. The Windows bitmap format does not support the idea of transparency. However, the Windows metafile format does (see the next question). Can I convert a Windows bitmap (BMP) file into a transparent Windows metafile (WMF)? In theory, yes. In practice, we are still looking for a good way to do this. Basically, there are two approaches you can ...

DPI used for coordinate system (while EMF is a vector format, it (and R) use discrete coordinate systems). custom.lty. logical: if false, approximate R line types with EMF standard line types (any program that imports EMF should support this). If true, use exact (custom) R line type, which is only supported by LibreOffice if using EMF+.
