Activesync is over-the-air synching directly from the Exchange server - has nothing to do with desktops. Winmobiles, Iphones, and Droids (among others) all have the activesync protocol built in so they sync natively with Exchange over the air; they never have to be connected to a computer (that defeats the purpose of having a cellular device).

You can get an ActiveSync client for Blackberry if you want to work that way, but using BES Express will give you the best experience, which in my opinion is far better than the ActiveSync end user experience, particularly on what I can do with my Blackberry with regards to my mailbox and accessing the internal resources (I don't care about apps).
