In Adium, you should be able to chat through transports transparently (that is, it should work just like chatting with users who actually are on the same server). However, you will need to contact the administrator of your XMPP ("Jabber") server to find out what services it has transports for.

- Adium is capable of having direct one-on-one chats as well as group chats. However, due to limitations of the OTR protocol, Adium does not support encryption during multi-user group chat. It only works in one-on-one chats. - Adium keeps unencrypted logs of OTR chats by default. See Step 6 to learn how to disable logging of encrypted chat sessions.

Aug 17, 2004 · #1 I love Adium. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to sign up for a Jabber account using Adium. I don't see a "register for new account" checkbox.. just username and password.. and when I fill in what I want, it just prompts me again since the account doesn't exist yet.

Now thoroughly in an experimental mood, I added a Jabber account to Adium, with the JID set to [email protected] and the connect server set to chat.gizmoproject.com. Sure enough, it works flawlessly. Contact list changes in Adium carry over to Gizmo and vice versa. The only Gizmo feature missing in Adium is voice chat. 😉

Just set up your account as if you were already registered by following the steps described in Creating Accounts, including your desired Jabber ID and password. When the account attempts to connect, Adium will notify you that the account is not yet registered and will offer to register it.

We recommended Pidgin for Windows; it is open-source and free and Adium uses Pidgin's core (libpurple) for most protocols. Other options include: Trillian (commercial; free 'lite' version available) Miranda (open source; free). There are some skins available for Trillian and Miranda which modify them to look like Adium in some ways.
