When people talk about LDAP they are normally referring to ADAM / OpenLDAP / OpenDS etc. ADFS v3.0 only works against AD. The next version (ADFS vNext) will work against LDAP. The easiest way is to federate ADFS with something that does support LDAP e.g. Shibboleth or simpleSAMLphp.

ADFS does support LDS, but only for storage of user information, not for authentication. ADFS supports LDAP for attribute stores, not for authenticators. By the time it gets to LDAP (or SQL, or a custom store for that matter), the authentication has already occured, and is only calling into the attribute store for information about the user.

The Application only supports LDAP and does not support SAML. I don't want to expose our AD to the Internet for obvious reasons. We have already setup ADFS including Web Proxies for a previous project and am hoping to use that. if I go to our ADFS DNS Host Name (ldap://adfslogin.domain.c om:389) it pops up a search box.
