Because separate programs will run on their own core so even if the game only uses 2, other programs can use the others and will steal less performance from the cores running the game. That being said though, right now benchmarks show a fast dual core outperforming a lower clocked quad core in almost every game.

Apr 11, 2008 · Quad support only matters if a game is close to saturating both cores in a dual-core that's clocked reasonably high. In that case then pretty much nothing except Supreme Commander.

Sep 08, 2015 · Also the requirements for games is not really because they are quad processors but because of cpu power they deliver, after all its pretty natural for a i5 chip to be more powerful than i3. Also that i3-4160 chip, well its just quarter more powerful than my 5 year old phenom 2 955.

Ryzen works fine in most games, but the performance crown goes to the i5, and i7s can be helpful in a handful of games. Going from a 4 core i5 to a 6 core 12 thread Ryzen gained me zero frame rates in a number of games.

Yes games DO use 8 cores. I want to correct a common misconception. I still get tons of people telling me the 8 cores in the 8350 (or similar) are useless and that most games only use 2-4 cores.

The 6 core CPU does 24% better than the quad, and the 8 core does 24% than the 6 core, and 53% better than the quad core. Note that the 8350 still does worse than the i5 2500k in minimum FPS. This is why quads are still the gold standard. AMD's IPC is so weak with the FX CPUs that 8 cores still can't match a quad.
