The first thing to know is that TRIM should be enabled on all I/O abstraction layers. This means that if you have an ext4 partition on top of LVM, which in turn is on top of an encrypted volume with LUKS/dm-crypt, then you must enable support for TRIM in these three layers: The filesystem, LVM and dm-crypt.

I've added support for TRIM'ing even if the fs is on an LVM or dm-crypt device. This currently only supports linear logical volumes on top of a single device (i.e. no striped, mirrored, or concatenated volumes), but it does support arbitrary LVM and dm-crypt stackings (i.e. LVM on top of dm-crypt …

Thus, to enable dm-crypt pass-though SSD trim support (a.k.a. discard) for dm-crypted devices opened during boot you have 2 options: add rd.luks.options=discard to the kernel command line and make sure that the initramfs image doesn't include a etc/crypttab

Aug 14, 2011 · If you are using software FDE (Full Disk Encryption) with such device, TRIM could have some side and unexpected effects. Linux kernel 3.1 (with user space support in cryptsetup 1.4.x) will optionally support TRIM on dm-crypt encrypted disks.

dm-crypt supports many different combinations of ciphers, modes of operation, and IV modes. Some of these are not as secure as others, some are considered to be highly insecure (for example ECB). You can read more about cryptographic ciphers and modes of operation elsewhere. If in doubt, stick with the default parameters.
