Dec 23, 2010 · In your BIOS you can set your SATA/IDE mode, often as something called "Legacy or Native" or "IDE, AHCI, RAID" AHCI and RAID both will enable the full feature set of the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) where RAID will allow you to combine multiple disks to create either a larger volume, add redundancy to the system or create a clone.

I re-enabled that SATA slot in the BIOS settings and booted Windows 7. It found the new disk, installed the ATA drivers, and finally after one more reboot all is good.

Dec 30, 2014 · Aug 3, 2011 at 09:33 UTC. If you have SATA drives, use AHCI. ATA runs the SATA controller in compatibility mode and loses the native features. The only OS you'll probably have trouble with is XP. With XP, you'll either need to hit the F6 key and provide a floppy with drivers, or slipstream the install.

Sep 06, 2011 · If you have it set to RAID but have no RAID drives configured, it'll fall back to AHCI automatically. One benefit in manually selecting AHCI is you save a few seconds in a cold boot as it skips the RAID setup screen. Back before SATA, we all used ATA. It's in the bios primarily for legacy support.
