After the party was created thtey were anti-slavery as opposed to democrats who were pro slavery. Republicans had a lot of support in the north and the democrats had support in the south during the civil war.

The opposition to slavery split the Whig party with the antislavery Whigs founding the Republican party, mostly in the north. Pro-slavery Whig founded the short lived American party mostly in the south.
