That still doesn't mean you're running CUDA on an AMD device. It merely means you convert CUDA code into C++ code which uses the HIP API. It also doesn't support all features. I wouldn't classify this as a CUDA workflow for AMD devices. – Bart Aug 8 '17 at 13:57

Not literally. CUDA supports only NVidia GPUs. AMD has a translator (HIP) which may help you port CUDA code to run on AMD. I haven’t heard of large-scale use of it. Interestingly, Intel has recently introduced OneAPI, which proclaims itself to be applicable to all GPUs.

Plus, if AMD did support CUDA, then CUDA technologies such as GPU-accelerated PhysX would also be available to owners of AMD GPUs. See more Graphics cards news Tech deals, prizes and latest newsAuthor: Ben Hardwidge

The GPUs of Nvidia’s rival, AMD, can’t support CUDA, which has led to some video professionals relying on the macOS platform to grumble over Apple’s long-term reliance on AMD GPUs.Author: Alex Cranz

Unfortunately, a resounding NO. No Radeon GPU has ever supported CUDA to begin with as that technology is restricted to Nvidia GPUs. What's more, the HD 4870 is now obsolete – which means that it's too old to even support the version of OpenCL that newer versions of Premiere Pro require for OpenCL GPU acceleration support.

Mar 13, 2017 · CUDA only runs on NVIDIA cards. If you are interested in GPU programming on AMD cards (and NVIDIA, as well as CPUs), you should take a look at OpenCL.

Mar 14, 2016 · That means that programs written in the CUDA language are no longer exclusive to Nvidia graphics chips.” According to Otoy’s CEO, Jules Urbach, the point of developing this CUDA translation layer is so that the company’s high-end Octane Render software can run as easily on AMD GPUs as their Intel counterparts.Reviews: 1

Feb 20, 2013 · By the way, Nvidia just added CUDA backend support for open-source LLVM which allows it to build binary for Nvidia GPUs. This is simply Nvidia protecting the CUDA monopoly. Otherwise companies which use LLVM would end up using OpenCL which would benefit everybody equally.Reviews: 13
