I installed gentoo using the x86 handbook and a recent sysrescuecd usb drive. The install was unremarkable except for trying to build a 64 bit kernel. No matter what I do, the kernel build fails very early with the message: kernel/bounds.c:1:0 error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set.

Dec 12, 2017 · The liveCD you have chrooted from appears to be 64 bit, so the kernel is set up for a 64 bit CPU. If you really want a 32 bit kernel, exit the chroot, then go back in with Code:

Jul 01, 2010 · Remove the -march=i686 part, it does not support 64bit instructions. Multilib also does not work if you do not know how to handle the 32bit vs 64bit dlls clashing on install, so do avoid it unless you know what you're doing.
