Diagnosis: either the kernel has no MPPE support, or this version of pppd is incompatible with the MPPE kernel module version you used. The most likely cause is using PPP 2.4.2 or later on a kernel that has an MPPE module built for PPP-MPPE 2.4.0 or 2.4.1. For a bit more history on this, see also Why are the pppd options different?

May 28, 2004 · 2. mppe module that is shipped with 2.4.x kernel series is missing from the default kernel of this release 2.6.x, i wont blame nobody for this absent module but it is an inconvinence because i know a lot of people who connect to their company/organization's VPN using MS mppe protocol and they cant do it with the default 10.0 community releases kernel.
