Clang chooses one of these two modes automatically based on the way directives and clauses on those directives are used. The SPMD mode uses a simplified set of runtime functions thus increasing performance at the cost of supporting some OpenMP features.

    Clang supports two data-sharing models for Cuda devices: Generic and Cuda modes. The default mode is Generic.     Coming from Android Studio it was sufficient to add "-fopenmp" to the compiler flags. VS seems to support equal compilers in this template gcc 4.9 and clang 3.8. I read that under "Configuration Properties -> C/C++ -> Language" there should be an option to enable OpenMP support, but in case of this template the option is not there.
