There is one solution, although it is a bit of a pain. Put a isl/dot1q capable device (like a 2900XL) between the 2950 and 1900. This way you can ISL from 1900 to 2900XL, then dot1q from 2900XL to 2950. I know this is not ideal, but Cisco say they have no plans to support ISL on the 2950 ! Daniel,

Note: The steps to configure trunking on the Catalyst 2950 or 3550 series are almost the same. The 2950/2955 series switches do not require step 4, as they only support 802.1q and do not support ISL trunk encapsulation. Cisco Catalyst 3550 Series switches support both ISL and 802.1Q trunks.

Apr 14, 2015 · If the command doesn't exist, then I would have to conclude that the 2950 is running software that no longer supports ISL and thus, dot1q is the default and only option. Newer switches won't support ISL, some switches stopped supporting it as of certain IOS versions. Others still support it even with newer versions.

Mar 29, 2007 · Far as I know, 2950's dont support ISL even in the latest release, and it isn't on the roadmap. 2970's support ISL and dot1q, I'm not sure about the 2960's though. 3550's do support ISL as well. If you can configure dot1q, you can configure ISL (as long as you know how to use ?) .
