Cat6 can be used for 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps and 10Gbps. But Cat6 can support 10GBASE-T for only up to 55 meters (depending on crosstalk) and frequencies of up to 250 MHz. Cat6a (Cat6 augmented) is designed to support frequencies of up to 500 MHz, which is twice that of Cat6. And Cat6a can support up to 100 meters when transmitting 10Gbps.

10GBase-T will work at 100 meters for Cat6A cable and upto 50 meters for Cat6 cable. Also it is compatible with 1G and 100m speeds, so you can deploy your switch ports and start using it to connect to existing 1G server ports and migrate the server ports as you can.

Mar 11, 2012 · To be sure you'd really have to go Cat6a according to Wikipedia. If you're unlucky you'll only get a maximum cable length of 37m and you have to be careful when bending it and stuff.

Oct 07, 2014 · Officially, 10Gb runs over Cat6 up to around 55m without any bundles of cable iirc (and 35m if bundled), and on Cat6a to 100m. 10GBASE-T makes use of transmissions of 500MHz which needs better cable.
