Cat6 can be used for 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps and 10Gbps. But Cat6 can support 10GBASE-T for only up to 55 meters (depending on crosstalk) and frequencies of up to 250 MHz. Cat6a (Cat6 augmented) is designed to support frequencies of up to 500 MHz, which is twice that of Cat6. And Cat6a can support up to 100 meters when transmitting 10Gbps.
CAT6 cable can be used in a 10G application, but there is a distance limitation of 55M (180ft). To reach full 100M (330ft) length, CAT6A cable must be used to comply with 10G specifications. CAT6A or CAT6 “Augmented” is the recommended cable for 10G networking applications.
According to guidelines, category 6 cabling less than 37 meters (121 feet) should support the 10GBASE-T application and cabling between 37 meters and 55 meters (180 feet) should support the application depending upon the alien crosstalk environment.
