EF-S lenses have a mechanical configuration that makes it so that they cannot be mounted on cameras that are not compatible with ES-S lenses. In addition, a protective rubber ring is attached to the back end of EF-S lenses so that the camera body is not damaged even if you try to attach the lenses to non-compatible cameras by mistake.

Canon does not produce a “professional” category of EF-S lenses like the pro “L” lenses you find on the EF mount. Canon uses lower grade materials, while still producing solid results, for its EF-S line of lenses.

The EOS R is a 30 megapixel (6720 x 4480) Full Frame camera. If you use an adapter to mount an APS-C crop lens like the EF-S 10-22, the camera will automatically turn into a 11.6 megapixel (4176x2784) crop camera. It will not give you a Full Frame 10-22mm field of view.

By design, it is physically impossible to mount EF-S lenses on EF-only cameras. This is because the increased proximity of the lens to the sensor means that on full-frame sensor or 35mm film EF cameras the lens itself would obstruct the mirror's movement and cause damage to the lens and/or camera.

Lenses for the earlier Canon FD lens mount are not usable for general photography on an EF or EF-S mount camera, unless adapters with optical elements are used because they are made for a flange focal distance of only 42.0 mm. Most of these lenses require autofocus and aperture motors inside the body which isn't available in EOS bodies.

The short answer to your question is yes, an EF lens can be used on a crop-sensor (EF-S) Canon camera. The longer answer is that EF-S lenses are designed for crop-sensor lenses, the 's' denotes a smaller image circle, but it's otherwise a compatible mount. So, lenses designed for full frame (EF) will also work on your camera.
