In theory, yes, you can apply for income support while you are a student but the fact is the grants and loan (which they do take into account whether you take it or not!) will be too high an income to get anything from benefits. As far as I am aware, if you study full time at university (eg, social work) then you would not be entitled to income support as you can apply for a non means tested bursary which you do not have to pay back (around £4000).
