    It seems to me that all that this test is doing is checking for cairo >= 1.7.6 and cairo-ft (on linux) via pkg-config. From your output I guess that you compiled cairo or are trying to compile pango without freetype support.

I also exported PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable to the package and config as below.     The problem here is that our cairo has an :x11 dep that is enabled by default, and because pango depends cairo the xquartz path gets prepended to PKG_CONFIG_PATH, but xquartz has it's own cairo and so that ends up first in the path.
