The highest level of LTO that I see on the Backup Exec 11d HCL is LTO4. So, your LTO5 is officially unsupported, which is probably most obvious if you attempted to use the hardware encryption feature or WORM tapes. LTO6 support requires BE 2010 R3 with patches.

LTO3 and LTO4 are high speed tape drives which required a high amount of data throughput to provide adequate performance. There is a specific way to increase the caching in Backup Exec to achieve a more constant data stream to the drive buffer and keep data flowing more efficiently to the drives.

If you want raw performance, Backup Exec is also not the best application. Version 11d for example cannot write blocks bigger than 64K. LTO4 tapes really need 256K block sizes or above for high speed. Only from Backup Exec 12 onwards, 256K block sizes are possible.
