In the Beyond Arduino meetup last night we discovered that I had purchased the wrong chip; I bought the 328, not the 328p. These chips are for all intents and purposes exactly the same (well, ok I can't be sure because I can't yet figure out the difference!) but they have different chip IDs so avrdude complains.
