ATI released new drivers after the release of Ubuntu 5.04 that are much improved, you can grab these if you wish directly from ati.com.

Jan 31, 2014 · if X server does not start with driver "Ati" (first boot) change it to "vesa" and then follow the instructions on BinaryDriverHowto. On some manufacturer's cards (I think Abit, a red card) openGL doesn't work, gdb says crash happens in the driver.
