The version "8.54.2" was just something I guessed, not really sure if it is right. Now, it might very well be that I've done something wrong here, and I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get this going.

I had the same problem with installing the same driver on a fresh install of Jaunty for an ATI X800. The correct command line turned out to be: sudo sh ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run --buildandinstallpkg Ubuntu/jaunty Thx to Df8 for pointing me to the solution.

I am also running a 32-bit version of lucid, I believe, although that doesn't seem to be relevant in this case. Also, I did try installing the drivers provided with ubuntu.
