About floating-point support. The Arm ® floating-point environment is an implementation of the IEEE 754-1985 standard for binary floating-point arithmetic. Note In Armv8, floating-point hardware is integral to the architecture. Software floating-point is supported for AArch32 state, but is not supported for AArch64 state.

The Arm architecture provides high-performance and high-efficiency hardware support for floating-point operations in half-, single-, and double-precision arithmetic. It is fully IEEE-754 compliant with full software library support. This page describes floating-support relative to Cortex-A and Cortex-R processors. For information relative to Cortex-M, please refer to our DSP for Cortex-M page.

Oct 11, 2017 · The hard option enables full hardware floating-point support. The compiler generates floating-point instructions and uses the floating-point ABI. Floating-point function arguments are passed directly into FPU registers. Since there are no function prologue or epilogue requirements, no pipeline stalls are incurred with floating-point arguments.

RE: DSP vs NEON for Floating point - Added by Michael Williamson over 6 years ago The DSP floating point performance is very good compared to the ARM9. It's actually faster (when coded right) than the Cortex A9 because it has multiple ALUs for floating point.

While porting an application from Linux x86 to iOS ARM (iPhone 4), I've discovered a difference in behavior on floating point arithmetics and small values. 64bits floating point numbers (double) smaller than [+/-]2.2250738585072014E-308 are called denormal/denormalized/subnormal numbers in the IEEE 754-1985/IEEE 754-2008 standards.
