augustfrancke: depending on which linux distribution you have, /usr/lib64/lv2 may be more appropriate (particularly if /usr/lib64 exists). it also depends on where you got ardour from. if you got it from ardour.org (the only way that we offer any “official” support), then it will search all over the place for LV2 plugins. if you got it from your linux distribution, it may be more limited ...

I installed Ardour and all LV2 plugins I wanted to use from the offical repos like so: sudo pacman -S ardour zynaddsubfx drumkv1 synthv1. These plugins work as standalone, and I can route MIDI signals through jack to use them, but I can't open their GUIs inside Ardour when I use them as LV2 plugins.

While support for other synth plugin formats, like DSSI and native VST, may come in future releases, Ardour 3.0 looks set support only LV2 synths (though it of course supports LADSPA for effects, too). That obviously limits the selection somewhat, but there are still some nice synth plugins on offer.
