Apr 30, 2012 · As standard Apple TV does not support MPEG2 (as used on a DVD) nor does it support the .mkv container (even if it contains H.264 or MPEG4). MakeMKV wraps the MPEG2 from the DVD inside a .MKV container leaving the MPEG2 unaltered.

Jan 21, 2009 · mkv as a container requires quite some cpu power during playback and while quicktime on frontrow uses the gpu to help with 720p mp4 files, xbmc has to rely solely on the cpu for decoding and the atv has a comparatively lame cpu, but a decent gpu. and since the gpu api is closed source, I doubt that xbmc will ever be able to properly play back ...

Apr 16, 2011 · Looking forward to hearing the solution! Nearly all my files are in .MKV format and play fine with XBMC on my PC. I switched to an Apple TV to make things easier for my other half - having the PC hooked through the receiver was causing her too many issues. The Apple TV was meant to make things better but now I can't access 90% of my media!

Mar 12, 2011 · Hi, I upgraded to iOS 4.3 last night on the ATV2. I use an iomega iconnect to allow XBMC to connect to my media on a western digital USB via samba share over the network. I have many of my movies in .MKV format so I can get full Dolby 5.1 when watching them on the ATV. In the previous version of XBMC (from iOS 4.2.1 untethered boot), I was able to play MKV moview.
