Feb 06, 2007 · FireWire Target Disk mode will only connect to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus; if it is connecting to a drive other than the one you want, you need to rejumper and/or recable the drives so that the hard drive is in that position.

As such, if it is 'piggybacking' or 'threadjacking', we're obviously not in Kansas anymore. Once again - in a thread about firewire target disk mode help - does the target disk need to be the disk that will receive the data or does it matter?

Target Disk Mode is available to all Macs with Firewire. Thunderbolt Macs may have the same capability with Firewire adapter, though this has not been tested here. When you have a malfunctioning optical drive, and an optical drive based operating system you can use Target Disk Mode as a substitute. Be very careful you obey the sequence here.

Mar 19, 2017 · Target Disk Mode over USB only works when connected via USB 3, so it can only be used with 2012 and later Macs (despite Apple’s support article erroneously suggesting older models, by stating “any Mac”). Nor can Target Disk Mode be used with Apple’s USB-C charge cable, which is a USB 2 cable when used for data.
