Jul 02, 2002 · My old Scout broke the mounting brackets for the transmission cross member. I can bolt a piece of angle iron between the frame members and to the existing cross member. How do I calculate how much load angle iron of any given size can support? I need to gap 33". I tried online searches but only came up with trailer manufacturers and house builders.

A single angle iron that size screwed into solid wood or other solid material can support 3.9 lbs. of dead weight. If the angle iron is used for shelving, you would use at least two to hold 7.8 lbs. Three angle irons could support 11.7 lbs.

I am working on a DIY project in which an 2 foot long angle iron will be secured for 15 inches and the other 9 inches will be sticking out in space. My question is how much weight will the angle iron support at the end (9 inches from support)? The size I wish to use is 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” by 1/8”.

Angle iron by itself in the horizontal position loses it's weight bearing capabilty quite quickly. The 1 1/4 inch angle will start to roll in the middle when weight is applied. For the roof I would make small trusses with 2 pieces of 1 1/4 x 1/8 angle back to back with 3/8 rebar under them …
