The Java Plugin for web browsers relies on the cross-platform plugin architecture NPAPI, which had been supported by all major web browsers for over a decade. Google's Chrome version 45 and above have dropped support for NPAPI, and therefore Java Plugin do not work on these browsers anymore.

This package is part of the Android support library which is no longer maintained. The support library has been superseded by AndroidX which is part of Jetpack.We recommend using the AndroidX libraries in all new projects. Apr 08, 2016 · NPAPI support disabled by default. The announcement came in November, 2014, that Chrome 42 would disable NPAPI support for plugins like Java by default. The expected release date for Chrome 42 was April, 2015. The announcement also disclosed the permanent removal of NPAPI support from Chrome by September, 2015.
