Mar 02, 2017 · The chipset does not have any direct say in ECC support, the memory controller is inside the CPU. All AMD desktop CPUs since the Newcastle Athlon 64, including all Semprons, and all APUs since Trinity have supported ECC as far as I know.Reviews: 12

Right now support for ECC memory is heavily restricted on Intel platforms, making ECC memory support a nice boost for AMD's Ryzen CPU architecture and the easy choice for those that want to create a home ZFS server or NAS. You can join the discussion on AMD's Ryzen CPUs supporting ECC memory on …

It all started when leaks and then online product pages for AM4 motherboards appeared, since their specifications lists showed support for both ECC and non-ECC DDR4 memory. The reason that ECC is much more popular among AMD consumers is that it’s a feature that the company has never blocked.

With the release of AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU’s, AMD is allowing you to use both ECC and non-ECC DDR4 memory modules.Unlike Intel, which pushes you to buy their Xeon lineup, AMD is offering the flexibility to use both memory-types (ECC & non-ECC) on a consumer desktop PC.In case if you have decided to go with an ECC based memory module, check out our list of the best ECC DDR4 Memory …

Memory used in desktop computers is neither, for economy. However, unbuffered (not-registered) ECC memory is available, and some non-server motherboards support ECC functionality of such modules when used with a CPU that supports ECC. Registered memory does not work reliably in motherboards without buffering circuitry, and vice versa.

ECC is included on cpu level BUT not validated by AMD to work on Ryzen cpus. Hence it is also not guaranteed by AMD in the first place and that is where the memory controller is situated (in the cpu).

Jul 02, 2014 · AFAIK all AMD CPUs and chipsets *can* support ECC RAM, it's just up to the mobo manufacturer as to whether they make it available in the BIOS. When I ran a Sempron 140 + ASUS M4A785TD-M Evo that *definitely* supported ECC. Best bet is probably to download the manual for any mobo you're thinking of and check the BIOS settings available.
