FLAC tends to be more supported by third party devises and hardware where ALAC is not always supported. TBH I can think of a devises or playback software that does not support FLAC (besides Apple products) but I know i have run into many over the years that do not support ALAC.

Sep 18, 2018 · Apple Lossless also known as ALAC is as its names states a lossless compressed copy of the original CD track. It is possible to convert without any loss of quality from a CD track to Apple Lossless to FLAC to WAV to AIFF and back again since these are all lossless formats.

Jan 21, 2014 · If you are decoding a PCM stream and then re-encoding it to ALAC to send to Sonos then this might be the issue as this is then contrary to the comments here not decoding ALAC but rather encoding to ALAC. Now what may also be applicable is where the ALAC library your using comes from.
