Aug 13, 2004 · In general, beginning with AIX 5L™ V5.2, the AIX life cycle is being extended to a minimum 10-year life cycle. A minimum of six years of usage and fix support will be available to clients under the standard SWMA. Following that period, three years of extended support will be available under an optional, separately priced service extension.

Officially, AIX 5.1 ended support on April 1 2006, 5.2 is supported till 2008. Ultimately 5.3 is the way to go but as long as theres old hardware ou= t there the older versions of AIX will continue to be there as well. IBM made a new announcement regarding TL/SP lifecycle support of AIX on Feb 25th 2014. The key point is that AIX 6.1 TL7 and AIX 7.1 TL1 reach end-of-support effective 31st Oct 2014. The basic support policy for AIX is that they are supported "for the life" of the release.
