Detecting an actinic keratosis (AK) early gives you the opportunity to treat the lesion and prevent skin cancer before it starts. When diagnosed promptly, almost all actinic keratoses (plural) can be successfully removed. Left untreated, some AKs may progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Actinic keratoses, also known as AKs or solar ketatoses, are keratotic macules, papules, or plaques that arise from the abnormal proliferation of keratinocytes in response to UV light exposure. While most actinic keratoses may regress or resolve on their own, they may progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
