Because 32 bits are able to represent numbers up to 2 32 − 1 = 4294967295 = 4 GiB − 1 and therefore address up to 2 32 individual bytes which would be 4 GiB then.. There are ways to circumvent that, though. For example using PAE even a 32-bit operating system can support more memory. Historically this has most commonly been used on servers, though.

With a 256MB graphics card about 3.3-3.5GB of RAM can be addressed and used, assuming you have 4GB fitted. If you fit a graphics card with 1GB of memory only about 2.6-2.8GB of the RAM would be addressable and usable.

Sep 30, 2010 · If a PC is installed with 4GB of system memory, the computer itself will register 4GB but Windows 7 or Vista or XP will not be able to recognize it all. It's nothing to fret over, this is a normal limitation with 32 bit operating systems.
